Australian Dodgeroos Triumphant In Asia

The Chemist Warehouse Australian Dodgeroos have endured a successful campaign at the 2019 Asian Dodgeball Championships in Hong Kong. The Australian squad, comprising of four teams, were the most successful nation at the tournament, topping the medal tally across the four divisions.

The Dodgeroos were crowned champions in the Men’s and Mixed Divisions, Silver medalists in the Women’s Division, whilst our inaugural Under 21’s team took home Bronze.

Subsequently, each of Australia’s teams have earned a qualification berth for the 2020 World Cup in Cairo, Egypt. In the Asia region, the top five nations from each division qualify for the World Dodgeball Association World Cup.

The Men’s Dodgeroos had a had a magnificent campaign in Hong Kong, unbeaten throughout the tournament to lift the Asian Championships trophy for the first time since Melbourne, 2015. Lead by Mitch Hartshorn, the Men’s Dodgeroos brought out their A-game when it mattered most, overcoming an 11 – 17 deficit against Japan in the Semi Final, to storm home 19 – 17. Packed with confidence, the Men brought this form into the Final, prevailing 20 – 10 over Malaysia to take home the title.

Quarter Final: Australia 36 – 0 Chinese Taipei

Final: Australia 20 – 10 Malaysia

The Mixed Dodgeroos were equally as impressive as the Men’s team, unbeaten throughout the campaign to win their first Asian title since Melbourne, 2015. The Mixed Dodgeroos were simply brilliant, reaching the Final without any major speed bumps. The Mixed team showed true character and grit when the title was on the line, overcoming a 3 – 9 halftime deficit in the Final against Malaysia, to runaway with a memorable 14 – 10 victory!

Quarter Final: Australia 28 – 4 Philippines

The ever-consistent Women’s Dodgeroos had another impressive tournament, making their way to the Final once again. The Women were hit by several injuries throughout the tournament, including their captain Elli Dawinkel in the Semi Final, but rallied together in resolute fashion to win their way through to the Final – a 2017 re-match against Malaysia. Our girls fell short in the Final, but still came home with a Silver medal, securing qualification to the 2020 World Cup and retaining their number one world ranking!

Our inaugural Under 21’s Dodgeroos were mature beyond their years, putting in an impressive display in their maiden campaign on the international stage to take home Bronze from the Asian Championships.

Lead by coach Patrick McGuinness, we had nine players make their Dodgeroos debut at this year’s ADC. Each player has shown vast improvement, and developed astutely from their training programs over the course of the year. It’s been a privilege to have the Under 21’s introduced into our Dodgeroos family.
