Australian Dodgeroos Qualify for 2018 World Cup in New York
The Chemist Warehouse Australian Dodgeroos have successfully qualified in the Men’s, Women’s and Mixed Divisions for the 2018 World Cup in New York, at Madison Square Garden.
The Dodgeroos sealed their place, by winning Silver at the Asia Pacific Championships, held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The event acted as the region’s continental qualifying campaign for the 2018 World Cup.
The top-three nations in each division earned a berth in the world showpiece event. Our Women’s team already gained automatic qualification as defending champions, following its triumph at the 2016 World Cup in Manchester.
The 2017 Asia Pacific Championships was the biggest in its history. Ten nations competed, with further growth expected again in the next two years. The Asia Pacific nations included Australia, Brunei, Hong Kong, India, Iran, Japan, Malaysia (host), Pakistan, Philippines and Singapore.
Each of the three Australian teams topped their groups, and went unbeaten up until the Final, going down to the host team, Malaysia in each of the three matches.
Nonetheless, it was a fantastic campaign for the Australian Dodgeroos, who are set to play at the world renowned Madison Square Garden in 2018. A total of 10 nations will participate in next year’s World Cup, in each of the Men’s, Women’s and Mixed Divisions. These nations qualify from their respective continental tournaments in 2017, including the European Championships, African Cup of Nations, The Americas Cup and our very own Asia Pacific Championships.
In further great news for the global game, the World Dodgeball Association (WDA) recently confirmed it has received official Observer Status with the Global Associations of International Sports Federations (GAISF – previously SportAccord).
This opens up some great opportunities for the sport worldwide in growing participation, and further enhances the professionalism behind the sport. This provides the game with further impetus behind its ambition to become an Olympic and Paralympic sport.
Dodgeball Federation Australia would like to thank its sponsors for their continued support for the Australian Dodgeroos.
