Melbourne To Host 2022 Dodgeball World Cup
Dodgeball Federation Australia (DFA) is delighted to announce it has been selected to host the 2022 Dodgeball World Cup in Melbourne.
The DFA was given the green light as the host nation, with the official announcement taking place at the World Dodgeball Association (WDA) headquarters in Manchester, England. During the announcement, it was also revealed Cairo, Egypt would host the 2020 edition of the World Cup.
It is an amazing honour for the DFA to showcase the very best of dodgeball in our wonderful city of Melbourne. We would like to thank the World Dodgeball Association for giving us the opportunity to host such a prestigious event.
The inaugural World Cup in 2016 was held in Manchester, while the 2018 edition was hosted in New York City at the world renowned Madison Square Garden. The World Cup will be expanding in 2020, with the top 12 nations in the Men’s, Mixed and Women’s Divisions qualifying for the world showpiece event. The continental qualifying events take place every two years, with the 2019 qualifiers in Africa (Cape Town), Asia (Hong Kong) and Europe (Newcastle) and The Americas (Hamilton).
The World Cup announcement comes at an exciting time for Australian Dodgeball. In 2018, the DFA was recognised as a National Sporting Organisation by Sport Australia. A significant achievement for the sport, and the DFA as a National Sporting Organisation.
The city of Melbourne is renowned for its beautiful landscape, multiculturalism, fine cuisines, transport friendly destinations, and boasts some of the best sporting precincts in the world – including the world famous Melbourne Cricket Ground and Melbourne Park Precinct.
World Dodgeball Association President Tom Hickson believes Melbourne is an ideal city to host a major sporting event. “We are looking forward to bringing the Dodgeball World Cup 2022 to Melbourne, a city that is famous for hosting international sports events. Supported by the Dodgeball Federation of Australia we are certain that the Local Organising Committee in Melbourne will deliver a fantastic World Cup.”
After hosting the inaugural Asian Dodgeball Championships in Melbourne, 2015 the DFA has proven it can successfully operate an international event. The DFA has vast experience operating numerous events on a domestic level, including the Australian Dodgeball Premier League and the University Championships. Following the first two World Cups in Manchester (2016) and New York City (2018), we envisage the 2020 & 2022 World Cups to continue to grow in an upwards trajectory, gain greater media exposure and further enhance Dodgeball on the worldwide sporting stage.
Dodgeball Federation Australia President Robert Di Fabio is thrilled to have the World Cup on our doorstep. “It’s a proud moment for Australian Dodgeball to be given the rights to host the 2022 Dodgeball World Cup. Together with WDA, we look forward to putting on an amazing show, that will be not only be remembered for years to come, but importantly leave a long-lasting legacy for dodgeball development at grassroots level. The city of Melbourne will be a-buzz, who I’m sure will get right behind our Australian Dodgeroos.”
The 2022 World Cup announcement also comes off the back of the most recent WDA World Rankings (revealed in May), which sees the Chemist Warehouse Australian Dodgeroos in the top-four across all three categories.
Women’s Dodgeroos – 1st Place
Mixed Dodgeroos – 3rd Place
Men’s Dodgeroos – 4th Place
