Deakin University Wins 2016 Unibattle

Deakin University has won the 2016 Unitbattle Dodgeball competition, held on the Gold Coast from May 11 – 13.

Lead by captain, Glenn Backx, Deakin University went unbeaten during the round-robin phase, to record a pulsating 6 – 5 victory over last year’s winners’, Monash University in the Final. 

The victory was bitter-sweet for Deakin, who lost the 2015 decider to Monash, in another close contest. While Deakin appeared unbeatable throughout the opening two days, it wasn’t easy pickings in the Final. On the brink of suffering a heart-breaking defeat, Deakin managed to claw themselves out of a 4 – 5 deficit, going on to claim the final two sets of the match.

Meanwhile, in the Bronze Medal Play-Off, Deakin Unversity’s 2nd Team managed to take home the prize, recording a comprehensive win over the ever-impressive Western Sydney University.

Overall, the tournament was played in fantastic spirits. The camerarderie, respect and sportsmanship shown amongst the teams, on and off the court, was evident for everyone to see.

The DFA would like to thank Australian University Sport for their kind hospitality throughout the week, and importantly helping us grow Dodgeball through University involvement across Australia.

We look forward to working with Australian University Sport, to help grow this event, and make it bigger and better in 2017.
