DFA Women’s World Cup Trials – Review

Following the Chemist Warehouse Women’s Australian Dodgeroos’ triumph at the 2015 Asian Dodgeball Championships, our attention now turns to the 2016 World Cup in Manchester, England – where Australia has earned automatic qualification.

Craig Payne, the Women’s Dodgeroos coach, conducted the DFA Women’s World Cup Trials tournament on Friday, October 30.

The ladies were split into three random teams, playing a round-robin tournament, with each team playing each other on two occasions. The objective of this event was to not only access the vast playing talent from women’s dodgeball, but also to attract more ladies into the game and subsequently grow the sport.

The ladies put on a fantastic show, with some great talent on display throughout the tournament. Players who weren’t able to attend the event, were also welcomed to send in video footage.

Overall, we had in excess of 20 females putting their name forward to be included in the 2016 Women’s World Cup squad. This doesn’t include the six players who retained their place from the Asian Championship squad – Amber Darwinkel, Clare Spillane, Elli Darwinkel, Lakita Seigafo, Leanne Scott, Megan Coetzer.

From this event, an extended women’s squad will be invited to a training session for the next phase of the selection process.

Onto the event itself, the team Gotta Dodge ‘Em All clean swept their opponents. A 100 per cent record saw the girls finish in first position and claim bragging rights for the evening.
